Frederick Buechner's contribution to American fiction is significant because he so intuitively expresses developments within contemporary psychology and Christian spirituality. A prolific and award-winning novelist, Buechner has written three progressive memoirs, sixteen novels, and numerous other works of non-fiction. In each of his is works, he infuses a skilled literary expression with spiritual insight thorough a Christian world view.
Author Victoria Allen's thoughtful examination of the creative, spiritual, and psychological interaction Buechner's novels flows from her profound understanding of his work. With reference to his papers, memoirs, and 3earlier novels, Dr. Allen reveals how Buechner "listen's" to life, drawing on his personal experiences in psychotherapy and spirituality. In her comparisons of him to C.S. Lewis and Flannery O'Connor, Allen describes Buechner's; work as "an original and particularly relevant contribution to pseudomodern American fiction."
Victoria S. Allen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Californiana at Berkeley. She holds Masters degreees in journalism from Boston University, and in English from Georgetown University, as well as a Ph.D in Literature from the Catholic University of America. She resides in Nassau, Bahamas, were she teaches at the College of the Bahamas. Listening to Life: Psychology and Spirituality in the Writings of Freferick Buechener is her second book.
